EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL Journal WORK
What does successful work look like?
Successful work may have some minor errors, but demonstrates intelligent and active engagement with the assignment. The journals below are a little short in some cases, but are good beginnings.
Calvin's Plans for School
by Obed Caban
Here are two great characters: Calvin and Hobbes. Will Waterson’s tools for entertaining, informing, or comment on human nature. These guys are best friends and go through everyday problems or issues together in a quite peculiar way.
In this strip Calvin is complaining about there being too many class days. A law should be made against school days when there is enough snow to play. Then again, he thinks, there should not be school on the fall either. He proceeds to locate not free days, but free seasons in the calendar. There should be school, though. Only two days a year! Hobbes traditional reaction to Calvin’s ignorant comments and way of thinking is presented. He just tries to perform a reality check on Calvin by using some humor-tone idea or consequence. Calvin, in his peculiar immaturity, manages to find a certainly overlooked aspect and reach the main goal.
I chose this strip because of how the issue of school days is developed. To think that it can sound that easy but have such harsh backfire and yet there being a positive way to look at it. Calvin understands that when one can have some fun nothing should be in the way, especially boring school. So he takes out winter school days and snow days wouldn’t interfere. There should be no class in the fall just because, apparently. There’s already no class in the summer. Spring shouldn’t be left alone so… It seems that there are two days in the whole year were it will be just as fun going than not going to school. Those days should be the only school days.
Two days a year seems and is too little school. It would work for people who don’t have to earn money (since no education is required). There are a lot of experiences that are learned in school which a person loses by missing school. I agree that a lot of stuff can be learned without school. Unfortunately, or not, we live in a world where money is power and the world is inhabited by power-hungry people. This power is gained by attending school.
If the author developed this theme to stimulate thought on the subject by the readers he did a good job. Even better, if he had only done it for mere entertainment he would have succeeded at that, too. Yet the theme is one that can produce hours of deep and controversial conversation, especially by high school or younger students. Some would remove a lot of days from their actual school year. Surprisingly some would add days thinking that it will end some suffering or that it will be a good investment of time.
Overall, a lot of people have given thought to this subject and founded a quite efficient education system. Even today that system keeps changing and adapting to its present, but always maintaining knowledge accessible to people who want it.
Leadership: A good opportunity to show up in life
by Adamle R. Cruz Ocasio
At present we are living difficult times in which humankind must face many problems related with economics, politics and religions. Through our history these problems and situations have caused great preoccupations among the many nations of the World. If these problems were present throughout almost all our history, then there were people behind all the actions taken in order to solve them. This people were the ones that dared to show up and get involved in the situations and that is why they are remembered as part of our history and followed (if applicable) as role models. Analyzing their behavior we could identify them as leaders, creative persons, people with dedication, vision and positivism.
First of all I would like to establish my opinion about the slogan “Get involved… the world is run by those who show up”. To me this is a very valuable message because of its relation to the importance of getting involved in what happens towards us. Getting involved and participating in the solution of problems and such things, helps us feel satisfied for our efforts no matter the results that we obtain. “We should not keep ourselves form taking a specific action only because we feel afraid of not obtaining the expected results. The worst could happen only if we don’t, because we would never obtain any results at all”. Many people would agree with me when I say that Puerto Rico’s society establishes its people value and quality having in mind their actions towards society’s situation, no matter if your contribution is economic or social, etc. In my opinion any person could be identified with the message of the slogan because we all believe that our contributions to the World’s well-being show the kind of people we are.
Previously, I mentioned that the people that get involved actively in today’s issues can be identified as leaders. A leader is a person who is capable of achieving his/her goals because he/she has the necessary abilities and knows how to take advantage from them. Is very important to remember that leadership is not a inherited trait and that it is a characteristic that can be learned and improved. Leaders are characterized by their determination, creativity, self-confidence and by their contributions as they get involved and show up in benefit of the world.
At present I am the Local President of a Junior Chamber of Puerto Rico Chapter which is affiliated to the Junior Chamber International. The Junior Chamber International is a worldwide organization in which all members get the opportunity of learning and improving their leadership. Through my participation in Junior Chamber’s activities and through my work as a Local President, I had the opportunity to contribute in benefit of other people. Ignoring the fact that I really don’t like to put bumper stickers on my car I would feel proud of having one with the discussed slogan because it contains a message that must be read by everyone. Maybe through it people could feel motivated to do something for society.
Every day I try to contribute in some way to my community and surroundings. Taking risks and actions that, in some way, could be of great importance in the future for mankind.

Analysis of a Comic
I will talk about a comic from the book “Calvin and Hobbes”. The one I chose was the one on page nineteen. I liked it because it is very realistic from my point of view, it is something that I personally have experienced when I have to do some homework. As the kid says “the last-minute panic” as the inspiration for making a story sometimes function to make a good one. It is not an inspiration but sometimes when you write your first thoughts about your topic, those are the right ones. It is a comic that I think many people would like and they could identify themselves with it.
I found it also very funny because it isn't something usual in a comic and you don't expect it. Also it is funny to hear something like that from a kid, because he says it with innocence. The funny thing about it is the courteousness of the commentary coming from a little kid. It is also serious because the commentary comes from a serious conversation between an innocent kid and his friend. Also it is, as I said before a real situation that happens to kids and adults. Although it happens to both of them adults do not have the sincerity of kids to say it. The seriousness of the comic comes from the fact that it is a real situation but written in a funny way.
The comic is written in the page where the author is writing the process of creating a comic, that is why the thought is about writing. I think that what he is trying to say has something to do with the thoughts that come to your mind in the process of writing. The message that he is trying to express is that when a comic writer has pressure to write something the creativity comes in an spontaneous way and sometimes that spontaneity is what makes the comic a good one.
I agree with his combination of the “last minute panic” and spontaneity of ideas, but I think that spontaneity can be applied to every person who has to write something. It can be homework from a student, a writer (of any kind) who has to write something very quick, or any other situation. Although writing is a very long process, sometimes the hurry helps to think about it.
This comic is a very original one. It is funny and at the same time it is real. When someone reads it, the person at the same time that laugh he or she can identify themselves with the situation of the comic. I found it very interesting and funny. Also I think almost every student in the RUM pass through that experience because we have fame of leaving everything to the last moment. It is something that happens to all students, not only in university but also in Elementary and High School. And not only to students, it can happen also to professionals when they are in a hurry (and that is almost always).
