PROBLEM SOLUTION ESSAY
INFO on PROBLEM SOLUTION ESSAY FOR 3201
Some information regarding your problem solution essays, the action document, and your oral presentations you will be making on the problem solution plan.
Your essay, as always, needs:
A. An interesting and relevant title
B. An introduction which states in some way what the problem is that you are trying to solve. It should also get your readers'interest,.
C. A thoughtful and creative thesis sentence [UNDERLINED] that clearly shows YOUR viewpoint about YOUR specific proposal to resolving an aspect of a specific problem.
D. An overview of the proposal to solve the problem, and how it will work. A short description of the proposal.
E. A more detailed explanation of the proposal, which would include:
1) The different steps needed to implement the proposal*
*the Action Document will be part of these steps, and you can mention it in your essay. The actual document will be like an appendix or additional materials with the essay, or a link to an example of the action document on your webpage.
2) The materials and resources needed to implement the proposal
3) The time needed to implement the proposal
4) A plan for how you can evaluate if the proposal works or not, that includes the criteria you will use and the time you will need to allow to evaluate the proposal
F. Some discussion of how your proposal is new or different from other ideas and plans that have already been tried or that are being done at this time by other groups.
G. Necessary information, facts, statistics, etc to support your statements and claims in the essay.
THESIS SENTENCE INFO:
Remember that your thesis will most likely be in this form:
X is the most effective way to solve Y-problem.
Example: Training and hiring homeless people (X) is the most economic way to reduce the problem of (Y) illegal parking in the downtown area of Mayaguez. The phrase “most economic way” is what reflects the author's opinion.
ACTION DOCUMENT INFO:
The action document, which we discussed in class, should contain or show awareness of these elements:
A specific desired audience
A specific action that you want this audience to do for you
Necessary information to help the audience to do this
Contact information in case the audience wants to help in some other way
Some identification that shows who or what group is responsible for the “action document”

HERE IS A BRIEF EXAMPLE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT AN ACTION DOCUMENT MIGHT LOOK LIKE:
An action document supports part of your work in the essay. For example, if part of your plan includes creating a citizen's group to identify local homeless people so government agencies can help them, then having a meeting to create the group sounds like a logical step. A flyer inviting interested people to attend this organizational meeting might be an appropriate document to create as an “action document” to go with the essay.
A webpage action document can serve similar functions, but will be in your webpage you make for this class. Since the media of the webpage is different from other formats, there will probably be several differences in how you choose to present the information and the types of actions you may suggest.
Next. The oral presentations will follow this format:
If you are presenting:
A)You go to the front of the class, and write your name on the blackboard
B)You write your specific social problem on the blackboard
C)You write your thesis on the blackboard
D) WITHOUT WRITING ON THE BLACKBOARD,
You explain the MAJOR parts of your plan, giving examples or supporting details as necessary
You say how you will evaluate the success or failure of your plan
You ask if there are any questions
Answer the questions if you can. If you cannot, just admit that to the audience. There may be good reasons why you cannot answer, or perhaps why no one could answer.
If you are the audience:
You write the name of the presenter on a page you will turn in later
You write the problem and the proposed solution that he/she proposes
You write questions or doubts you have about their plan
Rate your friend's presentation with a score from 1 to 4, and then justify or explain the rating.
HERE is the score explanation:
1=poor, couldn't hear or understand presentation, didn't make sense
2=fair, understood ideas, did not present new ideas for solving problem OR ideas didn't seem like they would be useful for this problem
3=good, ideas are new or different, relevant to problem, logical and clear
4=excellent, the plan appears worth trying -I would want to help him/her try to implement this plan
You will turn in the papers with your evaluations of your classmates on the last day of the presentations. Your work will have the value of 2 quizzes.
