COURSE DESCRIPTION
This
course provides the basic principles of Smart Materials and their integration into novel designs. It classifies the materials according to their Response and Stimuli. It describes the effect of crystalline structures in the properties of smart materials such as piezoelectric materials, magnetostrictive materials and  shape memory alloys. Other smart materials studied are the electro-rheological fluids and magneto-rheological fluids. Particular attention is given to the structure-property rekationship and to the application of smart materials into mechanics of structures, passive and active vibration control and on the principles of actuators and sensors.
