University Bicycle Master Plan (2014-2015)
Location of Study: Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez, Mayagüez, PR
Keywords: bicycle, bike lanes, parking, bike share, signage, route planning, etc.
The central objective of this project is to provide a roadmap for future improvements to the internal bicycle routes of the university campus. It will provide an update to an existing document that was prepared by Ride a Bike, a student organization that promotes bicycling on campus, titled Estacionamiento e Infraestructura Ciclista del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (see below).
This project contributes to our ITE student chapter's mission to support alternative modes of transportation. Through it the study of bicycle facilities can be achieved as a viable transportation project while affording an opportunity for students to work in a familiar environment like our university campus. Initiatives like this design project demonstrate how our student chapter contributes to our local communities.
Providing engineered bicycle facilities is the most productive way to improve safety for Colegiales (UPRM students) who commute on bike daily to campus. A campus project such as this can serve as a model to other universities of Puerto Rico for developing cycling facilities on existing roadways.
Proposal developed by Ride a Bike, a student organization in partnership with Campus Verde published in Fall 2012
