Our Program

The Physics Department of the Mayagüez Campus developed an academic program in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology.  The development of this program has the favor of a project with a cooperative agreement between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus.

An actual student of a Bachelor program in Natural sciences, math or engineering can take these courses as part of their elective courses.  If the student appropriately completes this sequence of courses he will be able to receive a minor in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology of the Physics Department which will make him a candidate to work with the National Weather Service (NWS).

The curriculum that is being prepared has to meet the specification GS-1340, of the Personnel Office Management of the Federal Government, which is the one that concerns the meteorology specialists.

The departmental effort consists of three stages wiches the first two are completed.

First stage
Design, preparation and approval of all the courses necessary to establish a designed curricular sequence under the standards of UPR and NOAA.  This stage is almost complete.

Second Stage
Offer this curricular sequence to the interested university community.  We have already prepared 16 credits in atmospheric sciences and are in the creation of the last 6 credits.  This stage began in August 2004.

Third Stage
A Bachelor Program in Sciences with a mayor in Atmospheric Sciences.
